Jockum Nordström
BEWARE THE DEVIL'S YARN
22.5 - 29.6 2008
Galleri Magnus Karlsson is proud to present Jockum Nordström's fifth solo exhibition at the gallery. It is his first big show in Sweden since the highly appreciated ”A stick in the wood” at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, in 2005. The exhibition consists of works made over the past year: drawings, collages and sculptures. Jockum Nordström’s characteristic style is recognizable, though today more primitive and austere.
– The stories are still important but the compositions have become flatter; less colourful. Like riddles, says the artist. The organic, animals and nature merely make up sporadic elements in the art works whilst buildings and harder abstract forms and surfaces are more prominent. Also, for the first time in Sweden, Jockum Nordström’s sculptures are displayed. Buildings made out of paper and cardboard have become increasingly important to the artist. They can be seen as an extension of the collages, or as three-dimensional drawings. Jockum Nordström was born in 1963 and lives in Stockholm. His work has been shown regularly since the late 1980’s, but he has also worked as an illustrator and author of children’s books. The past ten years he has achieved recognition as one of Sweden’s most successful artists. Having featured in several exhibitions at David Zwirner in New York and in art galleries across the world, he has made his name internationally. He is one of few Swedish artists represented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
