Karin Mamma Andersson (*1962 Luleå, Sweden) is one of Scandinavia's foremost contemporary artists. In her paintings she combines contemporary approaches to form and content with a specifically Nordic, romantic-expressive tradition. The widest variety of sources flow into her narrative paintings to create a surprising, intricate amalgam. Andersson draws not only on Nordic mythology, poems and fables, but also on theatre and film scenes very much rooted in our world, along with photographs from magazines and old books. All this is blended together with experiences from her own life, thus allowing the subjective, emotional perspective to become a part of her imagery. In this way the landscapes and interiors are consolidated into psychological spaces. With the unconventional combination of acrylic and oil - which variously are soluble and insoluble in water - Andersson has taken up a challenge in her palette that gives her narrative pictures an alchemical charge.
Karin Mamma Andersson has developed a cycle of new paintings specially for Museum Haus Esters, in which she has opened herself to the particular architecture and history of the location. The artist has entered into a painterly discourse with Mies van der Rohe's classic modernist architecture and in this way continued a tradition in Krefeld which in the past has already produced cycles of paintings by Eric Fischl and Karin Kneffel. The paintings devised for Krefeld will be flanked by loans from Swedish collections.
