Word Bites Picture is an ongoing project by Friend & Colleague, launched at the Storefront For Art & Architecture in 2013. Contemporary artists, selected on grounds of pure subjective preference, are asked to submit an artwork of their choice, without comment or background story. In response to the artwork, Katya writes a 500-word fiction, resulting in a ‘caption’ that does little to clarify the artwork, but might capture something that’s otherwise difficult to articulate, like atmosphere or disposition. Shown together, the artworks and their ‘captions’ adhere to one another through a kind of inanimate groupthink.
Word Bites Picture is a tongue-in-cheek take on Katya’s day-job as an arts writer, which hinges on the inaccurate science of ‘explaining’ art. The project subverts lofty ideas of expository art writing and objective curating, and addresses the cannibalism of all art and literature.
Among the artists featured in this upcoming show (in alphabetical order): Espen Dietrichson, Carl Hammoud, Todd Hido, Richard Misrach, Dasha Shishkin, and others. Previous participants include Vito Acconci, Michaël Borremans, and Otmar Thormann.
