Richard Johansson

They always come back

12.11 - 20.12 2009, Galleri Magnus Karlsson

Galleri Magnus Karlsson is pleased to present Richard Johansson’s fifth solo exhibition in the gallery.

In Richard Johansson’s new exhibition he has worked from without two artworks in the Swedish art history. Lars Hillersberg’s and Karin Frostenson’s “They never come back” from the collection of Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the work “Spanish Blacksmiths” by Ernst Josephson from collection of The National Museum in Stockholm. Both works have been transformed into three-dimensional sculptures/installations with contemporary content. With these two works Johansson has been able to work unrestrained and is now gathering the different expressions he has in his own artistry.

“My first overthrowing meeting with art was when I was 16 years old and bought the book ‘Swedish Alternative’ on a flea market in Jönköping. This was something else than moose in backlighting; here I met John E Franzén, Dick Bengtsson and Lars Hillersberg. Several of their paintings have been stocked into my mind since then. A couple of years ago Lars Hillersberg’s and Karin Frostenson’s work ‘They never come back’ from 1968 suddenly appeared.
Since then I’ve worked with my own sculptural work, ‘They always come back’, with my own reflections in present time, that is Sweden 40 years later.
The other paraphrase has its starting-point in Ernst Josephson’s ‘Spanish Blacksmiths’ from 1882.
My grandfather grew up in a bordar’s home and worked himself as a bordar in his youth.
He used to talk about that experience when I was a child.
Nowadays we have a new lower class, most of them are from the east.
They make dreams come true.”

Svenskt Alternativ på en loppis i Jönköping. Detta var något annat än älgar i motljus;
