From press release:
Video Art Festival Turku (VAFT) is a festival showcasing international video art, held for the third time in Turku on 23–27.5 2018, spreading across the city with a record amount of works. For instance, one may view a 24-hour long military opera on Turku City Theatre’s art display, drop by the Old Great Square where exhibition containers have been loaded with video art, or watch screenings at the movie theatre Kino Diana and the Main Library of Turku.
The festival is juried by filmmaker and artist Mika Taanila:
”I ended up choosing 24 with the idea of impacting them together into a dynamic dialogue. The works will be seen sprinkled around the city as a composition. Some will be viewable in a traditional cinema setting with high audio fidelity, where one can focus on the work itself intently, and some will be better suited to a format that’s attached to the environment – as per the wishes of the authors of the works themselves. The installation works can be viewed in any sequence whatsoever. Not everything has to be viewed. I also tried to include “annoying”, mysterious and difficult works. I hope the viewer is left with the opportunity to form their own tale in conjunction with these works.”
In addition to the juried selection, VAFT also co-operates with international and local festivals, presenting screenings of Turku Animated Film Festival (TAFF) and W:OW Art Film & Video Festival, along with a co-produced screenplay with New York Video Art and Experimental Film Festival (VAEFF).
Free entrance to all events.
Festival opening is held in Kino Diana (Humalistonkatu 3, Turku) on Wednesday 23 May at 7 pm. Welcome!
