We are delighted to announce Tommy Hilding’s fourteenth solo exhibition at the gallery.
Inversion presents a selection of paintings from the last four years.

In his recent exhibitions, Tommy Hilding has worked with a large variety of expressions in his paintings. He explores several paths simultaneously, and sometimes combines them in one painting. At the core there is a documentary and realistic visual language in which Hilding carefully constructs images of urbanity or the surrounding nature. A more abstract and spontaneous way of painting eats its way into the imagery and exists both inside and outside the motif itself. In recent years, Hilding has also tenderly integrated samples from art history into his paintings. These are usually motifs from 19th-century romantic painting which either blend seamlessly into the image or are put in contrast with the contemporary.

Spacetime (2022) is one of the central paintings in the new exhibition. The landscape here is borrowed from Scottish artist Alexander Nasmyth’s (1758–1840) painting Castle Huntly from 1810. In Hilding’s version, the landscape is both an image of a romantic painting and a real place to enter. What can be perceived as a backdrop or scene is at the same time an accurate environment and room description. A group of youths from the real world stand on the ground between the surrounding trees. Their clothes, hairstyles and posture implicate a ”here and now”. They gather around something that we can’t see, that has their full attention. They are placed in the scene, but could in fact be somewhere else. Something happens around the young people in the painting. There is a visible joint and disturbances in the gap that charge the image. A hand is hastily painted over with flowing paint and the realistic depiction turns into something abstract and dissolved.

Tommy Hilding’s paintings portray an ambivalence and rootlessness that exist in our time. He challenges chronology and reverses concepts with a language that is playful yet urgent.
