Tommy Hilding | Longing Not Belonging

(Scroll down for Swedish)

Galleri Magnus Karlsson is pleased to announce Tommy Hilding’s (b.1954) tenth exhibition in the gallery. Longing Not Belonging presents a new series of paintings made during the last two years.

The title of Tommy Hilding’s new exhibition brings to mind thoughts of alienation and a wish for something else. His recent paintings depict the concrete suburbs and the results of residential projects in Stockholm in the 60s and 70s, but it could also be similar environments anywhere in the world. The individual against the anonymous architecture where human destinies, love, sorrow and every-day-life takes place behind every stereotypical window. The images include both a subjective narrative and universal issues. Hilding works simultaneously with an almost photo realistic painting technique and a more abstract, expressionistic language. In many of the paintings large hung up banners with faces and landscapes creates images within the image. Faces that evoke thoughts about the need for attention, success and confirmation of our time and landscapes as a symbol of the longing and a reminder of the history and origin.

longing, away from and toward
away from the too well know
toward something else
toward something lost in the living
perhaps undefined and evasive

belonging as a limitation
exclusion as confinement
solidarity as an asset
alienation as freedom

prospects are mixed up, change meanings
insights are broken, change places

utsikter blandas, byter plats
insikter bryts, byter plats
