We are pleased to announce our sixth solo exhibition by Thomas Broomé: The Eaters. New sculptures, objects, installations and paintings will be presented in the exhibition.

 

Thomas Broomé (b. 1971) moves readily between techniques in his very own universe. With curiosity and thirst for knowledge he retrieves information and fuel from art history, science and philosophy. His interdisciplinary research turns into paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos and installations that mix logic with a little bit of madness.

 

With Modern Mantra (2005) Broomé began to create images with letters and words through repetition, which has become closely associated with his artistry. From the first black and white drawings, the work has expanded into paintings, three-dimensional sculptures as well as installations. Broomé has also used new techniques and developed a method in which the hand and digital technology work together in fruitful symbiosis.

 

In previous exhibitions, he has penetrated into the artistry of others and explored the relationship between artist, work and person. In The Guest (2012) he searched for Ingmar Bergman’s persona in a series of paintings and a film recorded in the house at Fårö. A few years later, the exhibition Pieces of Andy (2014) revolved around a fascination with the private life of Andy Warhol and his estate. Two works that in different ways settled with the myth of the great artist genius. In the latest exhibition at the gallery, Breaking Point (2015), he turned his gaze inward, and toward our time’s destructive quest for the ideal and unattainable.

 

The new exhibition, The Eaters, explores the creative process in various ways. Broomé recycles pieces from his own oeuvre and refers to famous works from Swedish and international art history. Here, the focus is on the very essence of creation, which in Broomé’s world turns into a joyful metabolism. Art is consumed with good appetite and its content is transformed, broken down and gives birth to new ideas. In a text written by Thomas Broomé for the exhibition, he returns to the time when he worked in the kitchen instead of the studio.

 

When I was at culinary school and we were boiling meat stock in gigantic pots, something I had never seen or done before, we would chuck in all the leftovers that weren’t garbage: vegetable peel, meat, bones, tendons from cleaning a steak, and any other tasty morsels that could add flavour to the ever-simmering pot that would sometimes cook for days. Nothing was wasted, and I really liked that process. Then, when we felt it was done (or when our teacher told us) we strained off whatever was still, surprisingly, solid and began reducing the liquid by boiling it violently, until all that remained was something we called meat glaze. This tasty and complex gelatinous substance was then used in our daily cooking to add flavour to a variety of dishes. A little goes a long way, or a lot becomes very little.

I often compare my artistic practice to making stock; I collect small fragments of ideas and observations that are boiled down, mashed together into a not always that appetising obsession. I never know what will captivate me or sometimes even why. But here I am, with my meat glaze, somewhat disappointed by this jelly-like, brown, umami-smelling idea. Should this really fascinate me, eat my time for what currently seems like an unfathomable future?

Thomas Broomé was born 1971 in Malmö, Sweden. He lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. He is educated at Konstfack­ – University of Arts, Crafts and Design (1997–1999) and Valand Academy (1993–1997). He worked for a long time as an artist together with the Interactive Institute in Stockholm. He has exhibited in galleries and museums in Sweden and internationally. He is represented by Galleri Magnus Karlsson in Stockholm and Bendana Pinel Art Contemporain in Paris, France. He has done several public commissions, e.g. Hermès in Shanghai, China and Drawing Hotel in Paris, France. Vi har glädjen att presentera Thomas Broomés sjätte separatutställning på galleriet: The Eaters. I utställningen visas skulptur, objekt, installation och målningar utförda det senaste året.

 

Thomas Broomé (f.1971) rör sig obehindrat mellan tekniker i sitt alldeles egna universum. Med nyfikenhet och kunskapstörst hämtar han information och bränsle från konsthistoria, vetenskap och filosofi. Hans tvärvetenskapliga undersökningar blir till målningar, teckningar, skulpturer, video och installationer som blandar det logiska med en smula vansinne.

 

Med Modern Mantra (2005) började Broomé skapa bilder med bokstäver, tecken och ord genom repetition, vilket har blivit något av hans signum. Från de första svartvita teckningarna har arbetet utvecklas både i målningar, tredimensionella skulpturer och installationer. Broomé har också använt sig av nya tekniker och utvecklat en metod där handen och digital teknik arbetar i fruktsam symbios. 

I tidigare utställningar har han trängt in i andras konstnärskap och utforskat förhållandet mellan konstnär, verk och person. I Gästen (2012) sökte han efter Ingmar Bergmans persona i en serie interiörmålningar samt en film inspelad i huset på Fårö. Några år senare kretsade utställningen Pieces of Andy (2014) kring en fascination över Andy Warhols person och kvarlåtenskap. Två arbeten som på olika sätt gjorde upp med myten om det stora konstnärsgeniet. I den senaste utställningen på galleriet, Brytpunkt (2015), vände han blicken inåt, och mot vår tids destruktiva strävan efter det ideala och ouppnåeliga.

 

Den nya utställningen, The Eaters, undersöker på olika vis den kreativa processen. Broomé återanvänder här brottstycken ur sitt eget konstnärskap och refererar till kända verk ur den svenska och internationella konsthistorien. Här ligger fokus på själva skapandets kärna som i Broomés värld övergår i en lustfylld metabolism. Konsten konsumeras med god aptit och dess innehåll omvandlas, bryts ner och ger upphov till nya idéer. I en text som Thomas Broomé skrivit till utställningen återvänder han till tiden då han arbetade i köket istället för ateljén. 

 

När jag gick på restaurangskolan kokade vi köttbuljong i stora grytor, något jag varken hade sett eller gjort tidigare. Då slängde man ner det som blev över men som inte var skräp: grönsaksspill, kött, ben, och senor efter man parerat en stek, och annat smått och gott som kunde ge smak till den ständigt småputtrande grytan som ibland stod på i flera dagar. Inget fick förspillas, och jag gillade den processen väldigt mycket. När man sedan tyckte att det fick vara nog (eller när läraren sa det) silade man av det som fortfarande mot förmodan var fast och började våldsamt koka ner, reducera, vätskan tills bara det vi kallade köttglass fanns kvar. Detta geléaktiga ämne fyllt av smak och djup använde vi sedan i den dagliga matlagningen för att smaka upp olika anrättningar. Lite ger mycket eller kanske tvärtom.

Jag har ofta beskrivit mitt konstnärliga arbete som en buljongkokning där jag samlar små brottstycken av olika idéer och betraktelser och sen får de koka ner, mosas samman till en inte alltid så aptitlig besatthet. Jag vet inte vad som ska fånga mig eller ens ibland varför det väl gör det. Men här står jag med min köttglass, lite besviken över denna geléiga, bruna, umamidoftande idé. Ska verkligen det här uppta mig, äta upp min tid, för en just då oöverskådlig framtid?

Thomas Broomé är född 1971 i Malmö. Han bor och arbetar i Stockholm. Han är utbildad på Konstfack (1997–1999) och Valands Konsthögskola (1993–1997).
