”Caspar David Friedrich”, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany, 15.12 2023—1.4 2024

From pressrelease:

Caspar David Friedrich is the painter who stands like no other for the art of Romanticism. To mark what would have been his 250th birthday, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is now presenting over 60 of his paintings, among them numerous iconic works, along with around 100 drawings, as well as selected works by his artist friends. The exhibition is the most comprehensive panorama of his art to be offered in many years. The main focus is on the novel relationship between human and nature evoked in Friedrich's oeuvre. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, he set a vital trend, transforming the landscape genre into "art for a new age". A separate section of the exhibition features works by around 20 contemporary artists who have been inspired by Friedrich, demonstrating his continued relevance for our present day. As we face the existential threats posed by climate change and environmental destruction, the fateful interdependency of human and nature that speaks from Friedrich's works resonates for us more strongly today more than ever before.

The anniversary exhibitions marking the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden are taking place under the patronage of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
