Oil on canvas. Landscapes, darkness and transmutation. The Swedish artist Sara-
Vide Ericson (b.1983) is one of the foremost Nordic renewers of landscape painting.
Ericson’s large figurative oil paintings draw on her immediate environment in
Hälsingland in northern Sweden.
Her largest solo exhibition to date, SUBTERRANEAN HUNGER presents pieces
that were created while winter was just beginning to relinquish its hold on the forests
around the artist’s home.
Ericson lives in a classic red-painted former school building among free-range hens,
beat-up old Volvos and rugged nature. Here, she creates her spellbinding landscapes,
which feel simultaneously familiar and alien. The sceneries of northern Sweden infuses
the intense oil paintings, which merge internal and external landscapes: Hälsingland
bogs, rivers and forests meet performative rituals and deeply personal experiences.
