Man kan då frestas att tänka att utställningen skulle återge en kronologisk historia om konstlivets utveckling lokalt i Sverige — men Edstrandska stiftelsens historia handlar om konstnärlig utveckling, och är därför långt ifrån linjär, utan sträcker sig mot bredare horisonter. De 20 konstnärer som valts för att utveckla denna unika historia är alla bevis på att skapandet av konst inte följer en rak, förutsägbar väg. Snarare utmanar utställningen den linjära tidsuppfattningen som är utbredd i det moderna samhället, och pekar mot sammanhang som sträcker sig över tid och rum.
Föreställ dig ett kraftigt rotsystem från vilket växter sprider sig, skjuter horisontellt fram under jordytan, utan fast centrum och alltid i rörelse. Så vill jag gärna tänka på den utveckling Edstrandska stiftelsen bidragit till — en mängd självständiga växter som fått möjlighet att växa sig starka var och en för sig, och som samtidigt ingår i ett större nätverk av nära förbindelser mellan subjekt, materia och föreställningsförmåga. Genom utställningens olika konstnärliga bidrag hoppas jag därför kunna förmedla känslan av att vi står mitt i ett utvidgat “nu”, varifrån vi kan betrakta något i tillbakablick samtidigt som vi kan skåda framåt i tiden.

This exhibition zooms in on a remarkable history: since 1951, the Edstrand Foundation has annually awarded one of Sweden’s largest art grants, thereby playing a significant role in shaping the artistic landscape that has developed in and around Sweden. Established in tribute to the siblings Reinhold, Gunhild, and Thekla Edstrand and their devoted interest in contemporary art, the foundation has influenced generations of young artists by giving them the opportunity to focus on their artistic development. This anniversary exhibition therefore also marks 75 years of art history and offers insight into the scope of what such sustained interest and commitment can mean for our society.
One might be tempted to assume that the exhibition would present a chronological account of the development of the art scene in Sweden—but the history of the Edstrand Foundation is one of artistic development, and as such it is far from linear, instead reaching toward broader horizons. The 20 artists selected to unfold this unique history all demonstrate that the creation of art does not follow a straight, predictable path. Rather, the exhibition challenges the linear perception of time prevalent in modern society and points toward connections that extend across time and space.
Imagine a powerful root system from which plants spread, pushing horizontally beneath the surface of the ground, without a fixed center and always in motion. This is how I like to think of the development to which the Edstrand Foundation has contributed—a multitude of independent plants given the opportunity to grow strong in their own right, while simultaneously forming part of a larger network of close connections between subject, matter, and imagination. Through the exhibition’s diverse artistic contributions, I therefore hope to convey a sense that we stand in the midst of an expanded “now,” from which we can look back while also gazing forward in time.
I hereby welcome you to the anniversary exhibition, ROOTED, which does not conclude 75 years of history but instead offers insight into a living movement that took root—and continues to flourish.
