Kyrkoherde Sven Milltoft ser stora möjligheter i just detta möte.

Jens Fänge Exhibits at Hedvig Eleonora Church
Internationally acclaimed artist Jens Fänge is currently presenting the exhibition *Solace* at Hedvig Eleonora Church. Here, his paintings, glass sculptures, and textile works encounter a church interior with its own unique architecture and history. The result is an artistic encounter in which both the works and the space challenge one another.
Jens Fänge is currently showcasing his exhibition *Solace* at Hedvig Eleonora Church. The title, which means ‘comfort’ or ‘solace’, is taken from a series of glass sculptures featured in the exhibition. The sculptures were created in collaboration with glassblowers at Berengo Studio on the island of Murano, off the coast of Venice. Fänge explains that he usually prefers Swedish titles, but that this particular word has a special ring to it.
–“Tröst” in Swedish takes on such a very literal meaning. I think this word is beautiful. It may not be immediately clear what it means, but it has a certain ring to it, says Jens Fänge.
From Stockholm to Tokyo, Paris and New York. Jens Fänge is one of Sweden’s internationally acclaimed contemporary artists. Since his breakthrough in the early 2010s, he has exhibited all over the world. In 2018, Bonniers Konsthall presented the acclaimed exhibition *Drömmarna*. He has also designed the diplomas for the Nobel Prize laureates in literature and is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
Jens Fänge describes the church interior as both inspiring and challenging. He has long appreciated the space and is looking forward to working with its unique characteristics.
–I think it’s an interesting challenge that the room isn’t easy. I’ve always liked this room very much. In a way, it’s something I welcome – the fact that I have to adapt to it, he says.
For Jens Fänge, there is also a clear link between the architecture of the church interior and the themes that recur in his artistic practice. It is about humanity’s relationship with its surroundings and the interplay between the individual and the structures that surround them.
–My art is, in a way, about people in relation to their surroundings, which might be architecture, for example. It’s a bit like a wrestling match. Either we try to take control of our surroundings, or it is our circumstances that shape us. I think that struggle becomes visible here in some way, says Jens Fänge.
In the process of arranging the artworks within the church interior, Fänge will design the exhibition on site, allowing the potential of the space to influence the placement of the works and the layout of the installation. It is an approach in which the finished whole emerges from the interplay between the artworks and the architecture.
Vicar Sven Milltoft sees great potential in this very encounter. He points out that the church has previously hosted several art exhibitions, including one featuring the glass artist Ann Wolff.
–This space is by no means straightforward. It’s fantastic, but that makes it all the more enjoyable to be able to work on art exhibitions here, says Sven Milltoft.
At the same time, he emphasises that the church differs from a traditional gallery. The art must be given space, but the church is also a place for worship and devotion.
–When working in a space like this, you have to both submit to it and challenge it, whilst allowing yourself to be challenged. At the same time, it is a sacred space that needs to function. As a vicar, you have to strike a certain balance. In an art gallery, you can do whatever you like, but here it’s about entering into a dialogue with the space whilst daring to challenge it, says Sven Milltoft.
For Jens Fänge, the work is not about determining in advance exactly how the art should be interpreted. Instead, the encounter between the artworks, the architecture and the visitor is allowed to create new contexts.
The opening of the exhibition Solace will take place on Thursday 22 October at 6.30 pm in Hedvig Eleonora Church. As part of the opening, there will be an artist talk between Sven Milltoft and Jens Fänge. The evening will conclude with a reception.
