Sara-Vide Ericson.

Sara-Vide Ericson, one of Sweden’s most acclaimed artists, has embarked on an expedition to the Arctic—which has always been regarded as the world’s forbidding frontier.
Work on this book began aboard the icebreaker Oden during the Canada–Sweden Arctic Ocean 2025 expedition, as part of the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat’s artist-in-residence program. For six weeks in the Arctic Ocean, Sara-Vide Ericson worked in a container on deck while the ship broke through two-meter-thick ice. It was a transformative creative process that also involved venturing out onto the ice to gather material—both for the works that took shape on board and for her continued work back in her studio.
During the expedition, Sara-Vide Ericson explored the necessity of becoming “empty” in order to be filled. By combining observation with sensory experiences of the extreme climate, the painting merges with the landscape. Nature becomes a projection surface for our inner lives—for fears, limitations, and human instincts.
This magnificent art book is being published in conjunction with the opening of a major exhibition at Liljevalchs in Stockholm. The title of both the exhibition and the book alludes to “drift” as the psychological concept for the underlying forces that govern our actions and needs. The works depict human striving in an uninhabitable landscape that reflects human fragility and an irreversible impact on the surrounding world.
“I seek a point of intersection where the light above the surface and the dark depths create a sense of vertigo—a state that was, in part, a physical sensation I experienced on board, and, in part, a condition that defines the terms of painting: the relationship between presence and distance, the warm and the cold, the measurable and the bottomless. In this encounter, a bodily charge emerges—a friction in which the human is simultaneously the victim and the perpetrator; both at the mercy of the forces and the one who influences them.” Sara-Vide Ericson.
