Stephen Friedman Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Mamma Andersson. Andersson, born in 1962, paints complex compositions that bring together a variety of sources including Nordic figurative painting, folk art and contemporary iconography. She juxtaposes thick impasto and loosely washed areas to create dreamlike and expressive vistas yet also allows reality to enter her paintings in the form of the commonplace. With sparse gestures concentrating on the essentials, and combined with fine details, Andersson manages to conjure up scenarios that speak to the human condition. These works are enriched by her own personal experiences and so are indebted to her subjective, emotional perspective.
Andersson represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 2003, was the recipient of the Sven-Harry Foundation Scholarship in 2004 and in 2006 she won the Carnegie Art Awards first prize. In 2007, she was the subject of a critically acclaimed, mid-career survey at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, which travelled to the Kunsthalle Helsinki and Camden Arts Centre, London. In 2012, Andersson's work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Germany. Her work is included in prominent international collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
The exhibition runs from 27 April to 25 May 2013 in our 25-28 Old Burlington Street gallery.
